Entropy and the Present

The actual is only ever the present crossing.
The past is potential — not actual.
Entropy is a property of the actual.
Therefore entropy is only ever as big as the present.

The second law says entropy increases in a closed system.
The bilateral mesh says the closed system is only ever the present crossing.
The past is potential. Not actual. Not closed.
Entropy does not accumulate. It transitions.
The universe does not run down. It runs through.

I. The Second Law and Its Assumption

The second law of thermodynamics holds. Entropy increases within a closed system. Disorder grows. Energy disperses. The arrow of time points in the direction of entropy increase. This is real, confirmed, and not in question.

The question is what counts as the closed system. The second law assumes the system is closed — that the entropy accumulates within a fixed boundary over time. It assumes the past is part of the system. It treats time as a container within which entropy accumulates.

The bilateral mesh framework challenges this assumption precisely.

II. The Actual Is Only the Present

In the bilateral mesh the actual is only ever the present crossing. The crossing fires. \(\tau\) accumulates. The present moment blooms. Then it is past.

The past is not actual. It is potential — the post-annihilation residue, the Chow ring, the fossil of the crossing. The past crossing has fired. It is gone from the actual. It exists now as potential — as the record in the bilateral mesh, as the label on 0 that persists after the crossing. But it is not actual. Only the present crossing is actual.

The future is also not actual. It is potential — crossings that have not yet fired, frontier positions not yet reached. Potential, not actual.

Only the present is actual. Only the crossing is actual. And the crossing is always the same size — the present moment, the bilateral event, one crossing at a time.

III. Entropy Is a Property of the Actual

Entropy is disorder in an actual system — the dispersal of actual energy, the loss of actual order, the increase of actual randomness. It is a property of what exists right now, not of what existed before or what might exist later.

If the actual is only ever the present crossing — if the past is potential and the future is potential — then entropy is only ever as big as the present. It does not accumulate across past crossings because those crossings are not actual. They are potential. Entropy in the past is potential entropy — the record of disorder that has transitioned from actual to potential.

The universe does not accumulate entropy without limit. Each crossing produces disorder in the actual. When the crossing fires and the present becomes past, that disorder transitions to the potential side — becomes part of the record, the fossil, the post-annihilation residue. The next crossing begins fresh. The actual is always just now.

IV. The Second Law Restated

Standard statement: Entropy always increases in a closed system.

Bilateral mesh restatement: Entropy increases within the present crossing — within the actual. When the crossing fires, the disorder transitions to the potential. The next crossing begins with the entropy of the new present, not the accumulated entropy of all past crossings. The actual is always just now. The closed system is always just the present.

This is not a violation of the second law. It is a clarification of what the closed system actually is. The second law describes what happens within the present crossing. The bilateral mesh describes what happens at the boundary of the present — at the moment the actual becomes past, at the crossing event itself.

V. The Cosmological Constant Connection

Speculative

The cosmological constant \(\Lambda\) — the ratio of utilised to unutilised potential — may be the measure of how much of the accumulated potential record is available to seed the next crossing. Not an entropy accumulator. A potential reservoir. The small positive value of \(\Lambda\) reflects the tiny fraction of 0's total potential that has actualised — meaning almost all potential remains available for future crossings. The universe does not run down because the potential reservoir is effectively infinite.

VI. Life and the Arrow of Time

Life maintains low entropy locally — it runs the syphon, draws from the potential, maintains order in the present crossing. This is not fighting the second law. It is operating at the crossing — drawing from the potential side to maintain order on the actual side, exactly as the bilateral mesh structure permits.

The arrow of time is real — \(\tau\) accumulates monotonically, the present always moves forward, the past is always potential. But the arrow does not point toward heat death. It points toward more crossings. Each crossing is fresh. Each present is new. The actual never accumulates. It is always just now.

The universe does not run down. It runs through.

VII. Information Preservation

Labels cannot escape 0. Every crossing is recorded in the potential — the post-annihilation residue preserves the crossing geometry. Information is not lost when entropy disperses in the actual. It transitions to the potential side. The record is preserved.

This is consistent with the current consensus on black hole information — information is not destroyed, it is preserved in the Hawking radiation, encoded in the transition from actual to potential. The bilateral mesh provides the mechanism: every crossing preserves its record. Information transitions. It does not disappear.

The entropy that disperses in the actual is not lost information. It is information that has moved from the actual face of the crossing to the potential face. From the present to the past. From the crossing to the record. Still there. Just no longer actual.

On the status of this paper. The core observation — the actual is only ever the present crossing, entropy is a property of the actual, therefore entropy is only ever as big as the present — follows directly from the bilateral mesh framework's treatment of time and the actual/potential distinction. The second law restatement follows from this. The cosmological constant connection is speculative and clearly labelled. The information preservation claim is consistent with current black hole physics and the bilateral mesh axioms. This paper establishes the direction.
